Behind every approved building permit is a process of applications, technical reviews, corrections, and communication. Ataman Studio Architects is looking for a Permit Coordinator to help keep that process organized for custom homes, ADUs, residential renovations, and other architectural projects across California.
Architectural drawings may be ready, but that doesn’t always mean a project is ready for construction. A missing document, an unresolved plan-check comment, or an outstanding departmental clearance can hold up the next step.
That’s where a Permit Coordinator makes a difference.
You’ll help manage the administrative side of architectural permitting, making sure applications are properly organized, submission requirements are understood, and outstanding items are followed through.
The position involves working with architects, designers, engineers, and local building departments. You’ll track project status, coordinate required documentation, and help keep the team informed about review comments and upcoming actions.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving administrative challenges, working with detailed records, and keeping multiple moving parts organized.
You’ll support architectural projects throughout the permitting process, from preparing initial application packages to coordinating responses and tracking approval status.
Organize permit applications, architectural drawings, supporting forms, and project information for submission to the appropriate city or county departments.
Monitor application status, review progress, and outstanding requirements. Maintain clear records of what has been submitted, reviewed, or returned for revisions.
Review incoming plan-check comments, distribute them to the appropriate project team members, and track corrected documents through resubmission.
Communicate with building and planning departments regarding application requirements, appointments, submission procedures, and project status.
Help identify and track additional clearances that may be required from planning, engineering, utilities, fire, or other relevant agencies.
Maintain organized permit records, submission histories, correspondence, and status updates so the architectural team can quickly understand where each project stands.
A successful Permit Coordinator doesn’t need to make architectural design decisions. Instead, the role requires an understanding of how different documents, departments, and review stages fit together.
Accuracy matters. A drawing revision must correspond to the correct application. A response to a correction notice needs to reach the appropriate reviewer. An outstanding clearance should be identified before it becomes an avoidable delay.
Strong follow-through and clear communication are essential.
Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) permitting procedures.
ePlanLA and other electronic plan review systems.
ADU permits, residential alterations, and home additions.
Zoning clearances and planning department requirements.
Building permit correction notices and resubmission procedures.
Coordination with engineers, architects, and other consultants.
Experience using spreadsheets or project management tools to track application status.
Experience with permitting in other California jurisdictions is also valuable, since procedures and documentation requirements can differ between cities.
Our permitting work covers a variety of property types, each with its own documentation and review considerations.
Support permit applications for new residential buildings, coordinating drawing packages, required forms, zoning information, and departmental clearances.
Assist with permitting for accessory dwelling units, home extensions, and property improvements that must comply with applicable local development requirements.
Coordinate permit documentation for renovations involving structural changes, new layouts, building systems, or other improvements requiring approval.
Help organize submissions and track review requirements for larger residential developments and selected commercial projects, where multiple departments or consultants may be involved.

A Permit Coordinator organizes permit applications, tracks municipal reviews, coordinates correction notices, and communicates with building departments and project team members. The role helps ensure that required documentation and administrative steps are properly managed.
No. This is a permitting and administrative coordination role, not a licensed architect position. Architectural and engineering decisions requiring professional licensure remain the responsibility of appropriately licensed professionals.
Experience with LADBS and its electronic permitting systems is particularly valuable. Familiarity with other California building departments, permit applications, or plan review procedures may also be relevant.
You'll help coordinate the application and review process, but permit approval decisions are made by the relevant government authorities. The role focuses on documentation, follow-up, communication, and tracking outstanding requirements.
Yes. Permit coordination involves communicating with architects, engineers, designers, and other project professionals to organize documents, communicate review comments, and track required revisions.
Depending on the project, you may assist with permits for custom homes, ADUs, residential additions, remodeling, multifamily developments, and selected commercial work.
Include your resume, relevant permitting or construction administration experience, familiarity with municipal review procedures, and examples of how you've managed documentation or coordinated complex workflows.
