Description

Perched on a scenic hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean, this contemporary single-family residence was designed to embrace the relaxed indoor-outdoor lifestyle that defines Hawaii living. With a total area of 5,970 sq ft, the home features five bedrooms, five and a half bathrooms, and expansive living spaces that maximize ocean views, natural light, and year-round outdoor enjoyment.

From the very beginning, the design vision was centered around openness, airflow, and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape. The layout orients all major living spaces toward the ocean, while a series of terraces, an infinity-edge pool, and outdoor gathering areas create a seamless transition between architecture and nature.

Materials & Design Features

To withstand the island’s climate and terrain, the home was built using a combination of exposed concrete, structural steel, and expansive glass. These materials not only provide durability and structural integrity but also contribute to the minimalist and modern expression of the house.

  • Reinforced concrete for structural mass and thermal comfort.
  • Steel framing to achieve cantilevers and large open spans.
  • Floor-to-ceiling glazing to capture light and ocean views.
  • Stone decking and natural wood elements to soften the exterior.

Home Design in Harmony with Nature

Designed to respond to Hawaii’s tropical climate and coastal environment, the residence combines durable materials with a refined contemporary aesthetic. Expansive glazing, natural stone, exposed concrete, and warm wood accents create a balance between modern architecture and the surrounding landscape.

  • Master suite with a “jungle shower” — an open-air bathing experience surrounded by native vegetation.
  • Infinity-edge pool that blends with the horizon.
  • Terraced outdoor spaces that connect different levels of the house.
  • Glass railings and open corridors to maintain transparency and maximize sightlines.
  • Seamless indoor-outdoor transitions with large sliding doors and shaded terraces.

Challenges & Solutions

The steep hillside location required extensive coordination with structural engineers and careful grading strategies. Retaining walls were integrated into the architecture to stabilize the terrain while maintaining an organic feel. Special attention was also given to passive cooling techniques, including cross ventilation, and shaded terraces — reducing the need for mechanical air conditioning.
