Perched on a hillside with panoramic views of the Indian Ocean, this contemporary single-family dwelling was designed to immerse its residents in the natural beauty of Mauritius. With a total area of 5,970 sq ft, the home features five bedrooms, five and a half bathrooms, and generous indoor-outdoor living spaces that blur the boundaries between architecture and landscape.
To withstand the island’s climate and terrain, the home was built using a combination of exposed concrete, structural steel, and expansive glass. These materials not only provide durability and structural integrity but also contribute to the minimalist and modern expression of the house.
This home is an expression of contemporary architecture tailored to a tropical hillside setting. Clean lines, flat planes, and a strong indoor-outdoor relationship define the aesthetic. The home adapts to the steep topography through stepped floor plates, creating split-level volumes that enhance privacy and visual drama.
The steep hillside location required extensive coordination with structural engineers and careful grading strategies. Retaining walls were integrated into the architecture to stabilize the terrain while maintaining an organic feel. Special attention was also given to passive cooling techniques, including cross ventilation, and shaded terraces — reducing the need for mechanical air conditioning.
